Oak entrance vestibule doors, St Michael’s, Sunninghill

Careful consideration and thought was given to the design and manufacture of these beautiful church entrance doors, Paddy was asked to replace the solid doors without fenestration with entrance doors that would enable those approaching to have a welcoming view leading into the building.

The church was built on Norman foundations with perpendicular style additions added in the early 19th Century. The Gothic influence – with a modern twist – was a design feature in the doors, with architraves fixed onto a panelled skeleton lining facing the lobby. The main feature was a carved central handrail on each glass face of the doors.

Purpose-made brass tie rods encapsulated ran through the glass and stiffened the handrails.

On approaching the door, the eye glimpses the flowing handrails on the opposite side which fan out like the calyx of a flower. The doors were polished with natural wax to a mid-lustre. A very slim quality Swiss door closing mechanism was concealed into the top head of each door with a hold open facility.
